BEF Model Watersheds

BEF strives to ensure that its watershed investments reinforce science-based restoration strategies and generate the greatest possible potential to improve stream habitat and recover native populations of salmon and trout.  To this end, the Foundation employs a comprehensive Model Watershed restoration approach that assures financial and scientific support to select priority watersheds over a 10-year period.  Within each Model Watershed project selected for support, BEF commits to provide scientific support, the services of a professional independent scientific review team, and funding for monitoring and assessment over the full duration of the project.  BEF’s commitment to provide technical assistance and support watershed restoration and monitoring over the long-term allows our Model Watershed projects to employ a systematic and scientific restoration strategy.  It also ensures that critical restoration needs are identified and addressed at the scales necessary to achieve substantial and lasting ecological improvements.

BEF initially applied a conventional, short-term approach to watershed restoration grant making in the Pacific Northwest.  However, upon reviewing the results of our earlier short-term watershed grants, it became apparent that our conventional watershed funding was promoting site-specific projects and piecemeal restoration strategies.  As a result, BEF elected to develop and implement a comprehensive, 10-year restoration approach. Through its Model Watershed Program, BEF now provides essential financial and scientific support to structure, develop, and sustain 10-year restoration and monitoring programs in selected priority watersheds.
