Payette High School

Payette High School was one of five Idaho schools awarded a Solar 4R Schools grant in 2007. Their 1.1-kW solar electric system educates students and community members about the functions and benefits of solar power in Payette, a rural town in western Idaho.

In addition to producing energy, Payette’s solar electric system includes web-based, real-time data monitoring that provides students with a comprehensive learning experience. Sustainable energy education is included in the school’s physical science, biology, technology and environmental science classes. Proposed student projects include a working portable model of the PV system to share with elementary students throughout the district. A plan to create a digital energy monitor for the school’s display case is also in the works.

Idaho Power provided funding for the system through their Green Power program. This voluntary program for the utility’s customers develops and promotes the use of renewable energy. Currently, over 2,600 of Idaho Power’s residential and business customers contribute to this program.
