"Today they’re students. In a few years they’ll be adults having to make choices on energy in their homes and in their country and the related environmental impact. This introduces some very important resource issues, while teaching science and math."

- Maggie Raczek, Science Teacher, Lincoln High School

Lincoln High School, in the Portland School District, is the ninth project in BEF’s Solar 4R Schools program, and one of four metro area schools to receive solar electric panels from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), the Energy Trust of Oregon, and Portland General Electric (PGE) during the first quarter of 2005.

The Solar 4R Schools program provides a demonstrable means of educating students on the functions and benefits of solar electric power at no financial cost to the schools. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school’s solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to help teachers instruct students on the benefits of renewable energy.

Lincoln High School's science teacher, Maggie Raczek, will lead the school’s solar education efforts. Nearly 100 percent of Lincoln students will use the solar project during their required science classes. The students will also be able to view a real-time display of the panels’ output in a school hallway.
