"The panels will help us teach science and math, but they’ll also increase awareness of how our energy choices impact the environment. What inputs and outputs can we afford in the natural world and the social world? We’re talking about making sure the earth is in good condition for the future."

- Jim Anderson, Science Teacher, H.B. Lee Middle School

H.B. Lee Middle School is the 10th project in BEF’s Solar 4R Schools program, and one of four metro area schools to receive solar electric panels from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), the Energy Trust of Oregon, and Portland General Electric (PGE) during the first quarter of 2005.

The Solar 4R Schools program provides a demonstrable means of educating students on the functions and benefits of solar electric power at no financial cost to the schools. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school’s solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to help teachers instruct students on the benefits of renewable energy.

H.B. Lee science teacher Jim Anderson will lead the school’s solar education efforts. The solar system will be instrumental to the success of the school’s Energy Club, through which students and teachers will raise awareness of renewable and alternative resources. Students will also report on the PV system’s function in the monthly school newspaper, and hope to educate the community through an annual solar panel car competition.
