During the 2004 Vote for Change tour, artists such as Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam, REM, Bonnie Raitt, and the Dave Matthews Band discussed ways in which they could highlight important global issues and simultaneously provide support to local organizations already working hard to promote community well-being. According to Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, "We decided to focus on global warming and the reduction of our reliance on fossil fuels by helping to fund renewable energy projects for community based organizations in the states where the tour played."  The artists formed the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project and partnered with BEF to identify and install the projects.

The Family Centers, a Madison, Wisconsin organization that prevents child abuse by strengthening families, hosts the third installation sponsored by the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project.  With additional financial assistance from the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation, BEF was able to commission a 4-kilowatt PV system that now provides The Family Centers with over 5,000-kilowatt hours of pollution-free electricity each year.  Thus, the project serves to demonstrate the viability of solar electricity and also allows The Family Centers to focus more of its resources on supporting local families.
