Natural Products, Sustainable Living & New Blog
Our staff participated in two health-oriented and sustainable living trade shows in March. The Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, Calif. and the Better Living show in Portland, Ore. both provided educational venues to explain the benefits of BEF Clean Energy Offsets.
Enthusiastic show attendees learned some important facts about renewable energy at these events:

  • A single, commercial wind turbine in the Northwest provides enough energy to power 200 homes for a year!

  • Eco-minded wedding planners can offer wedding favors to guests in the form of BEF Green Tags to offset their carbon footprint.
New BEF Blog
You can find more information, tips and a photo or two from these events on our newly launched blog: blog.b-e-f.org. In celebration of Earth Day activities around the world, we've now joined the online community with this new forum. It's still in its infancy, but we hope you will help us create an ongoing dialogue.

The Town of Breckenridge
The Town of Breckenridge, Colorado has purchased enough Wind Green Tags from BEF to offset the electrical energy consumption of their infrastructure. A small community nestled 75 miles west of Denver, Breckenridge is best known for its winter activities offered by the world-renowned Breckenridge Ski Resort, which hosted 1.6 million snow riders during the 2006/7-ski season.
"Our community is a unique resource and we want to work together to sustain it," said town manager Tim Gagen. "Purchasing wind energy offsets is one of the arrows in the quiver of all of the things we've been doing."
Coos Bay Project
In 2008 BEF continues to lead the way toward innovative and effective restoration of North American rivers and streams. In April, BEF signed an agreement with the Coos Watershed Association and agreed to provide $260,000 to support a comprehensive, 10-year Model Watershed program that aims to restore water quality, stream habitat, and depleted salmon runs in the rivers and streams that drain into Oregon's Coos Bay. To date, BEF has committed over $1.4 million to support science-based Model Watershed programs that restore habitat, water quality, and native fish populations. The Coos Bay project is BEF's sixth Model Watershed.
BEF Adds First Wind Project to Solar 4R Schools Program
In 2002, West Salem High School (Salem, Ore.) was just the second school to join the fledgling S4RS program. Since then, BEF has funded and managed solar installations in 14 states, expanding the renewable energy education program to more than 50 schools in the process. Now, West Salem and BEF are thrilled to announce another groundbreaking collaboration. Thanks to the generosity of Salem Electric, the school has erected a 1.8 kW wind turbine on its campus! To augment the educational benefit of the project, BEF has donated data monitoring hardware and will provide West Salem teachers with learning tools, including hands-on classroom activities that illustrate the benefits of wind and solar energy as well as conservation and efficiency.
