| Passing the Baton: New Leadership at BEF |
Like
the passing of the baton in a footrace, the time has come to hand off
to new leadership at BEF.
Effective January 14, 2008 founding President Angus Duncan has passed
the baton to Margie Gardner as the new chief executive officer of the
Foundation. While Angus remains engaged in a part-time capacity, he
will devote the remainder of
his time to focus on Oregon and regional global warming issues with The
Energy Foundation and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
"I'm delighted and enthusiastic to join BEF at a time of such optimism
and opportunity," said Margie. "I look forward to building on BEF's
existing successes to propell our renewable energy and watershed
restoration work to the next
level."
According to Angus, Margie now joins BEF to "provide enthusiasm and
solid judgment that will ensure our innovation and leadership in the
renewable energy industry."
BEF is already underway with a makeover to its brand identity in honor
of its 10 year anniversary. This is expected to rollout in the second
half of 2008. Ultimately, these enhancements will expand the existing
Green Tags, Solar 4R
Schools and watershed programs.
Margie was most recently the executive director of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA).

| FOX Broadcasting Company Powers Emmy's With Solar, BEF Donates System to Local School |
What
do you do with a solar-electric system after it powers the 59th
Primetime Emmy® Awards show?
Thanks to BEF's efforts, the 13.5-kW thin-film array, donated by FOX
Broadcasting Company (as part of their corporate-wide energy
initiative) and UNI-SOLAR®, will provide electricity and educational
opportunities to students at the CHIME
Middle School long after the stars of film and television have all gone
home. At the conclusion of the official EMMY ceremonies held September
16th 2007, BEF dismantled the system and will re-install it on the
school where it will generate
nearly 20,000 kilowatt-hours of pollution free electricity per year.
This Chatsworth, California school joins BEF's growing Solar 4R Schools
as our first in the region. The program now comprises 46 educational
institutions in 14 states. |

sports enthusiasts in order to educate the community and provide
tangible solutions that will
make a difference today. Additionally, they are helping to directly
fund renewable energy projects and work with local governments,
developers and homeowners to increase the sustainable development
projects in winter-sports regions.
Protect Our Winters is the newest partner in BEF's SkiGreen program. To

| Over 500 Kokanee Salmon Return To Lower Kootenai River Tributaries in Fall 2007 |
Twenty
years ago, Kokanee salmon runs in the Lower Kootenai
Valley, North Idaho, were considered "functionally extinct," meaning
that populations were too low to sustain themselves without
intervention. Since then, most years saw zero returning Kokanee.
Starting in 2001, BEF supported the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho and private
landowners to restore tributary spawning streams by planting 2,800
native trees, building streamside fencing, and better managing cattle
grazing. In 2002, BEF funded a
solar-powered water pump that helps keep cows out of the creek. Then in
2003, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho became BEF's first ten-year Model
Watershed Partner, who BEF has committed to support through 2013.
This fall our investment appeared to be paying off when over 500
bright-red, adult Kokanee salmon swam up these tributaries to spawn.
But it's never that simple. Reintroducing Kokanee salmon continues to
be a collaborative effort between
local and regional stakeholders not only to restore tributary spawning
habitat and plant Kokanee salmon eggs, but also to fertilize the South
Arm of the Kootenay Lake and improve the Mainstem Kootenai River. If
large-scale, collaborative
habitat improvement projects have succeeded, the offspring of this
season's spawners will return in 2011. |
