White Creek Wind Farm
In August of this year, the BEF staff had the opportunity to venture on a field trip to the 205-megawatt White Creek wind farm in south central Washington State. The project has been several years in the making. Once it's completed, it will be the largest wind project in the United States owned by public power. BEF partnered with several small, publicly owned utilities to build and own the White Creek wind farm in Klickitat County. For some of the BEF staff, it was their first opportunity to view the wind farm in person and to see the tangible results of their hard work. The staff arrived just as the sun was setting over the horizon - many were amazed at the sheer size of the farm. BEF hopes this project will pave the way for others in public power who are wanting to develop wind power, but are under financial constraints to support a project on their own. Kill Rock Stars Goes Carbon Neutral
Home to numerous influential indie bands including the Decemberists, Elliott Smith, Deerhoof, and the Gossip, the record label Kill Rock Stars has become the latest music industry supporter of clean renewable energy. Kill Rock Stars greened all of their offices by purchasing enough renewable energy certificates to offset 100 percent of their electricity use with BEF Green Tags. Posters Influence Approach to Watershed Restoration
This summer BEF collaborated with two of its 10-year Model Watershed partners to create posters that highlight the results of river restoration work completed to date. We presented these posters at five professional conferences and received positive feedback from managers, scientists, and local watershed groups across the nation. For example, one California watershed group elected to integrate BEF's 10-year watershed strategy into their ongoing restoration work. In addition, university professors have taken BEF's Model Watershed posters and began using them to teach courses in watershed management. Most importantly, BEF used this experience to develop new connections with community-based groups across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Download the posters at www.b-e-f.org/watersheds/.
Reading, Writing, Solar Power, and Vegetables
Inspired Teacher Integrates Math, Science, Community Building, and Conservation Planning with Solar Greenhouse Project

The back corner of the schoolyard at Hood River Middle School (OR) was a rather unremarkable piece of land until Michael Becker and his 6th grade class got a hold of it. In the last couple of years, that rather ordinary looking corner has become the central hub of innovation on the campus. The 6th graders are raising a greenhouse that will serve as a hands-on "learning lab" for the entire school. The students have researched, designed, and constructed every aspect of the project to date, and have already built an extensive perma-culture garden on the site. They will plant and tend to the vegetables, and will undertake extensive energy resource planning. The addition of a 1-kilowatt solar project, a gift from Portfolio 21 and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, adds significant educational value to the project. Mr. Becker describes the challenge presented to the students: "Their task is to figure out how to make that amount of energy, and no more, do what we need it to do."
