RENEWABLE ENERGY ADVOCATES WALK THEIR TALK BY ‘GREENING’ CONFERENCE EVENTS

American Council On Renewable Energy is the Most Recent Organization to Offset Emissions from Conference Activities, Including Travel

December 7, 2004 (Portland, Ore.) — The American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) announced today, that they have partnered to offset the environmental impacts of the Renewable Energy in America -- The Call For Phase II conference, being held today in Washington D.C., through a purchase of BEF’s Green Tags, also known as renewable energy credits or RECs. The purchase is designed to offset all of the estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the event, including the energy used at the conference facilities, and the travel and lodging of conference attendees.

ACORE joins the growing list of event organizers choosing to ‘green’ meetings, conferences, expositions and other special events by purchasing RECs. “Our mission is to bring renewable energy into the mainstream of America’s economy and lifestyle,” said Michael Eckhart, ACORE’s president. “The availability and affordability of Green Tags meant that we were able to offset the environmental impacts of our Phase II conference quickly and easily through BEF. This is an important idea whose time has come.”

Green Tags represent the environmental benefits associated with displacing the electricity produced from burning fossil fuels with clean, domestic wind and solar power. Each Green Tag represents the generation of 1,000 kilowatt-hours of from wind and solar power, and offsets approximately 1,400 pounds of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants. All of BEF’s Green Tag products are Green-e certified by the Center for Resource Solutions, and certified as Climate Cool by the Climate Neutral Network. ACORE’s purchase of Green Tags for the Phase II conference is the environmental equivalent of planting 20 acres of trees, or taking 15 automobiles off the road for a year.

In response to an increasing number of inquiries from customers, BEF is bolstering its capacity to provide travel and event greening services. It is supplementing its widely respected Carbon Calculator with additional web-based tools that enable customers to offset the environmental effects of individual trips, or single events.

“Many Americans are aware of the opportunity to voluntarily support renewable energy by purchasing green power from their local electric utility, or purchasing Green Tags from a Green-e certified provider, to offset the environmental effects of electricity use at their home or business,” explained Tom Starrs, vice president of marketing and sales at BEF, “but most are not aware that the environmental impacts of their travel are often just as substantial.” BEF’s new web tools enable visitors to calculate the carbon dioxide and other emissions associated with their activities quickly, and to purchase enough Green Tags to offset those emissions with clean, renewable power generation. About BEF
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in 1998 to restore watershed ecosystems and further the development and use of new renewable energy resources. Through revenues generated from the sales of green power products, BEF funds projects that restore damaged watersheds and support new renewable energy projects from solar, wind and biomass. BEF pioneered the sale of Green Tags in 2000 and has helped establish national standards for certification and trading. Created by regional environmental groups and the Bonneville Power Administration, the Foundation operates collaboratively with but independent of both.

About ACORE
