Wind Energy Takes Center Stage at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival
Festival to Offset More than 1 Million Pounds of Greenhouse Gases for its
June 14-17 Event
MANCHESTER, Tennessee (June 13, 2007)- This year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival promises to be even greener than previous years. Clif Bar & Co. partnered with the festival and purchased enough Wind Energy Green Tags, or renewable energy certificates, from the non-profit organization Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to offset the environmental impacts associated with operating the four-day event.
Each year, Bonnaroo assembles some of the best performers of rock and roll as well as other complementary styles on multiple stages. The festival is set on a beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. In addition to paving the way in the music industry and the arts, Bonnaroo is also committed to being a leader in the fight against global warming and environmental devastation. Bonnaroo and festival partner Clif Bar will offset approximately 1,086,400 lbs. of greenhouse gasses (primarily measured as carbon dioxide) by purchasing Green Tags. Each Green Tag represents the real savings in carbon dioxide and other pollutants that occur when green, renewable energy replaces electricity produced by burning fossil fuel. Included in these calculations are the generators running on diesel, gasoline, and B99 biodiesel, plus travel for over 100 bands. All of BEF’s Green Tags are certified by Green-e, the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy. Bonnaroo’s purchase of Green Tags directly supports the establishment of new renewable energy resources in North America.
In Bonnaroo's quest to become a green festival, 2006 was a landmark year. Over two hundred and fifty tons of waste was recycled, and the festival used over 25,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel to replace diesel for all non-music stage generators. "We have placed a premium on not just talking the talk, but walking the walk and showing people how they can make a difference,” stated Chad Issaq, director of corporate partnerships for Bonnaroo. Each year, the festival provides a marketplace for numerous organic vendors and farmers. In an effort to reduce waste, food is sold in biodegradable packaging, and even the cutlery is manufactured from renewable resources. Bonnaroo will continue the goal of having a “Leave No Trace Event” in 2007.
In addition to their carbon offsetting efforts, both Clif Bar and Bonnaroo have partnered together to create six recycling and composting stations, which will be situated throughout the festival grounds. These will include educational information for attendees about reducing their environmental impact. All of this work is part of the Clif GreenNotes program (www.clifgreennotes.com), which is a program created to work with artists and festivals to reduce the impact of their operations. “When artists partner with Clif GreenNotes, they can reduce their carbon footprint substantially while educating fans about how they can do the same,” said Grady O’Shaughnessy, Lifestyle Experience Manager at Clif Bar.
For years, Bonnaroo has featured Planet Roo, a portion of the festival
dedicated to environmental causes and wholesome living, centered around the
Solar Stage (a solar-powered performance space). Last year, Planet Roo was
larger and more widely publicized than in years past, but festival
organizers are hoping that 2007 will be the best year yet. With its purchase of carbon offsets through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a larger recycling effort, and an increasing commitment to biodiesel, Bonnaroo has made impressive additions to an already greener-than-usual atmosphere.

About Bonneville Environmental Foundation
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in 1998 to restore watershed ecosystems and further the development and use of new renewable energy resources. Through revenues generated from the sale of green power products, BEF funds projects that restore damaged watersheds and support new renewable energy projects from solar, wind and biomass. BEF was a pioneer in developing the market for renewable energy certificates, which it calls Green Tags, and has helped establish national standards for certification and trading.
