SIX PROJECTS RECEIVE FUNDS FROM BONNEVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION
April 25, 2000 (Portland, OR) - The Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) announced today that five watershed projects and one renewable energy project would receive a total of nearly $150,000 from the Foundation during this grant cycle. Five of the projects are located in Washington and two in Montana.
"These projects are good for their communities, good for the environment and good for the watersheds," said Senator Mark O. Hatfield, chair of the Foundation, during the announcement of the awards. "We acknowledge the good work of each of these six organizations for successfully navigating our rigorous selection process. All of these projects documented that they had the knowledge to do continued good work and the support of people who can help implement their proposals. The region's streams and fish runs will be healthier, and the air cleaner, for their efforts."
Added Foundation President, Angus Duncan, "We are committed to serving the entire Pacific Northwest. It is the buyers of green power, utilities and consumers throughout the four states, who are making these grants possible."
Grants were awarded to the Methow Valley (WA) Stock Watering project to protect and restore riparian areas by installing solar powered stock watering; the Big Hole Watershed solar stock watering project in Butte, MT; the Rock Creek Trust of Missoula, MT to purchase easements to protect the integrity of their watershed, the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation of Everett, WA to establish a riparian zone in the North Creek, the Stillwaters Environmental Education Center in Kingston, WA to provide a biological assessment for the Carpenter Creek/Kitsap Peninsula watershed and a renewable energy program with Orcas (WA) Power and Light to install new photo-voltaic cells on eight public buildings.
About BEF
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation was established in 1998 to collect and invest premiums from the sale of environmentally superior "green power" by arranging the sale of environmentally endorsed renewable energy to utilities and corporations. BEF funds projects that restore damaged watersheds and create new sources of renewable energy such as solar, wind and low-impact hydro.
Bonneville Environmental Foundation is a non-profit organization that collaborates with, but is independent of, the Bonneville Power Administration.
