Zephyr Flour, named after the Greek God of the west wind, was the flagship product of The Bowersock Mills and Power Company in the early 1900s. Over one hundred years later, although The Bowersock Mill no longer produces flour, it continues to produce clean, renewable hydroelectric energy for the region. The Bowersock hydroelectric project is certified as a low-impact energy resource by the Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) and as a newly repowered facility by the Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-e Energy certification program.
The Bonneville Environmental Foundation has collaborated with The Bowersock Mills and Power Company to offer Zephyr Energy, a program that promotes renewable energy in the Midwest through the sale of renewable energy certificates (RECs), also called Green Tags.
Green Tags help to replace energy from traditional, polluting sources with clean, renewable and sustainable sources of power. Each Green Tag is responsible for displacing greenhouse gases and other emissions on our nation’s power grids and is equal to the generation of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity.
